Everybody has to play by the rules
Von Ein Kunde
This epic story by James Jones of the pre-war Hawaiian 25th Infantry Division is one of the best military novels ever written. The struggle of Pvt Robert E Lee Prewitt to remain his own man when the Army won't let him, the conflict of First Sergeant Milt Warden between his love of the army and his love of the Company Commander's wife and similar all too human conditions leads the path up to that fateful day on December 7, 1941 when nothing is ever the same again for anyone. This book is a masterpiece and the movie made from it won 8 Oscars.

One of the Best Pre-war books I've Read
Von Ein Kunde
This is by far one of the best pre-war novels I have read in my entire life. This book was filled with real-life experiences. This book was very realistic and I can tell you that because I am a veteran from the war and this novel brought the pains and horrors of my experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who's interested in war books dealing with horrors of war.

The Best American Novel about Military Life
Von Thomas Butler
This is the best American novel about military life. I read it in 1965 before my stint in the US Army and I read it again in 1998. It helped me understand Army life before I was drafted. It is realistic, brutal, and moving. "From Here To Eternity" is better than any of James Jones other novels. You'll never forget Prewitt, Warden, Maggio, Karen Holmes to name a few of the characters.
